Daingerfield Lady Tigers capture softball honors

Daingerfield freshman, Camryn Byrd was named the Co-Newcomer of the Year, and four other Lady Tigers received recognition on the 2014 16-2A All-District softball team for their play this season. Sophomores, Lexi Porter and Meme Black earned Second Team honors, while Delaney Smith and Ashlyn Fomby were awarded Honorable Mention. Byrd, Black and Porter were also named Honorable Mention All-East Texas. Byrd finished her rookie campaign with a .375 batting average and 19 RBI. She scored 22 runs, stole seven bases, and led the team with eight doubles. Byrd also pitched for the Lady Tigers, striking out 116 batters in 125 innings while earning all 10 of Daingerfield’s wins this season. Porter earned Second Team honors as an outfielder. She led the team with 31 runs scored and 18 stolen bases, and was tied for the lead with a .429 batting average. Porter also had seven doubles, drove in 15 runs, and added two outfield assists on defense. Black was named the Second Team short stop. She equaled Porter’s .429 batting average to lead the team, and also had a team-high with 24 RBI. Black also had three doubles, one triple, and one homerun. Smith, the lone senior on the team, was named Honorable Mention for her play at first base. She hit .288 with 11 RBI, 10 runs scored, and four doubles. Smith also led the team with a .969 fielding percentage on defense. Fomby was awarded Honorable Mention at third base. She hit an even .300 with 14 RBI, 17 runs scored, and four stolen bases for the Lady Tigers.
