The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded Hughes Springs Area Public Library a $2,000 grant to support summer literacy.

Jean Austin, librarian, is excited about this grant because it will allow the library to host a first class summer library program. Ms. Austin states that although the library has a summer program each year, this year the library will have the funds to fully participate in the national summer library program titled “Fizz, Read, Boom!” (a science program). New easy colorful science books that correlate with the themes will be available for all age groups including some with high interest levels but with low level vocabulary and some written in Spanish. Two paid performers will entertain the children and prizes will be available.

“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of ‘serving others’ throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

The Hughes Springs Area Public Library is hosting summer read at 10:30 on Tuesday mornings during June and July for preschool and elementary students (two separate programs) and for junior high students on Tuesday afternoons at 1:30. Thursdays are Terrific Thursdays at the library with a different performer coming each Thursday morning. These include (in order) Happy the Clown,Smokey the Bear, Scott McCloud/Dusty Wiley from AEP, Farmer Preston Currey, Professional storyteller Dru Woods, Irene Webster from TXDT, Music Man Michael Tosh, and the Hughes Springs Volunteer Fire Department. It’s all free. Prizes will be given each week. Attend six Terrific Thursdays and be eligible for a grand prize to be given away on July 31.
