Allison Jones Shirk, a 1993 Daingerfield High School graduate, has launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help fund the recording and distribution of ‘Break My Heart,’ her debut country-rock album. ‘Break My Heart’ is an album 10 years in the making. It is comprised of her best original songs written over the last decade. The songs tell the story of her life, many of them centered on her experience of living in Daingerfield. “I poured my heart and soul into every song and held nothing back in recording them. This album is a diverse collection and no song sounds like another. Some will make you tap your feet and want to get up and dance, others will tug at your heartstrings,” Ms. Shirk said. She has already recorded the bass tracks for all 11 songs including bass, drums, guitar and vocals. Funding will go directly towards studio costs, hired musicians, mixing, mastering, pressing the CD, and distributing it. Ms. Shirk was born in Texas and spent most of her childhood (ages 8-18) in Daingerfield. After graduating, she attended Navarro College and then transferred to the University of Washington. She now lives on Vashon Island, a 15-minute ferry ride from Seattle. “Country music is in my bones. I think that this album is best described as folk country, but there is rock and blues in there too. It’s sweet and sassy like Norah Jones, contagiously catchy like Sheryl Crow, and hauntingly beautiful like the Cowboy Junkies,” she said. To support Ms. Shirk, visit www.Kickstarter. com/profile/allisonshirk, where you can watch a video about the campaign as well as hear the music. “I hope my hometown will at least give the music a listen. If you like what you hear, maybe you’ll buy the CD, set to be released in October of this year.” The Kickstarter Campaign is a time limited fundraising platform. Ms. Shirk has until Aug. 18 to raise the needed $8,000. If she does not meet the goal, she will not get any of the money. The turn to crowd-funding platforms, such as Kickstarter, is part of a broader trend by young singer-songwriters to seek funding from non-traditional sources. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects in which backers receive rewards for their support.
