Thanks to the kindness of East Texans, help quickly arrived to assist a stranded church group. The group was traveling north of Daingerfield on Highway 259 on July 22 about 10:30 a.m. when they found themselves stranded after their bus heated up, according to Morris County Deputy Peggy Connor. “Everything just fell into place,” Deputy Connor said. “I was driving by and saw the bus with smoke coming from under the hood. They had unloaded the kids. Within 5 to 10 minutes Elisa Henninger stopped by and dropped water off. It was awesome how everything fell into place.” Daingerfield Police Chief Tracey Climer and Officer Corey Parr assisted Deputy Connor on the scene. “Deputy Connor had a Redwater church bus broke down on Highway 259 North of Daingerfield just north of Williams Paint and Body,” Chief Climer said. “Officer Corey Parr and I assisted Deputy Connor. It was hot and they had approximately 40 to 50 people, mainly children, off the bus and standing on the side of the roadway. The group had just left Lone Star Baptist Encampment and they were traveling back to Redwater when the engine on the bus stopped.” Chief Climer said they contacted maintenance and transportation director James Long at Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District. “We had hopes of using a school bus to transport the children to a local church until arrangements could be made to pick up the children,” Chief Climer said. “Superintendent Sandra Quarles was contacted for permission to pick the children up and asked if it was possible to transport them back to Redwater. Mrs. Quarles had no reservations and granted permission to use a school bus. Mr. Long contacted Ben Terry to drive the bus. “It is awesome to see a small town like Daingerfield pull together to assist others. The lesson they had while at the Baptist Encampment was called ‘The Journey.’ I thought that was awesome as well.” Mrs. Quarles said they were happy to help.
