Southern Cross dedication service to be held Sept. 6

A Southern Cross CSA Dedication Service will be held for Captain Jessie Tennyson Brannon, and a special tribute to honor 16 other Civil War Veterans will be conducted at the Grice Cemetery, Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas. The time the dedication will begin is 10:00 a.m., Sept. 6. Tributes will be given by relatives and/ or Lone Star Confederate Color Guards. The public is invited to attend. Cameras and chairs are suggested for those attending the event.
First Sgt. Paul Hamilton, Commander of the Walter P. Lane Camp, No. 1455, of Longview, will be in charge of the roll call. The following veterans to be honored are: Aaron G. Boggs, John W. Cavitt, William A. Davis, J. H. Fenlaw, John Jackson Grice, Jessie Mar-tin Glasco, Thomas Jefferson Knight, Adolphus Emerson King, Thomas Jefferson Moon, William M. Rice, Jacob Shrum, Elisha Shrum Sr., Seaborne Weatherby, Paschal Kalough Williams, Joseph Berry Wade and Whitfield A. Wade.
Upshur County Patriots of Gilmer will be in charge. Other camps that will be helping are the J. N. Matt Martin Camp, No. 441, of Sulphur Springs, Red Diamond Camp of Texarkana, and other area camps. In attendance will be Sam Mercer, 5th Brigadier, Commander of Gregg County, Camp. Archie Hass, Native American (Name “Otter”), Color Guard, who will represent the Cherokee Nations in music and in dress in honor of these soldiers. Several United Daughters of the Confederacy will be available and place a wreath to honor these veterans. Also, the Order of Confederate Rose ladies will assist in the dedication. Joyce Fountain is the organizing coordinator.
A private luncheon for the re-enactors will be served in the Antioch Baptist Church. after the dedication, that is located on Highway 852. Mike Hammond is the minister.
Directions to the Grice Cemetery are: From West Tyler Street (also known as Highway 154), go west of Gilmer, turn right on to Farm-to-Market Road 852 for about 11 miles, turn left onto Giraffe Road, which is 0.3 miles to Grice Cemetery. For further information, contact Joyce Fountain, 903-738-4322.
