Shaking off first game jitters, the Mustangs stumbled for the first couple quarters of their regular season matchup with the Clarksville Blue Tigers. With the Mustangs dealing with a few costly penalties, and four turnovers, Hughes Springs could only manage 8 points in the first half and trailed 11-8 at the break. But with all good coaching comes adjustments, and that is exactly what happened Friday night. Coach Chris Edwards, Coach Stephen Barnes and the rest of the Mustang staff seemed to light the proverbial fire, and the varsity boys came out swinging. Fred Hopkins Jr., received the kickoff at his own 10 yard line to open the third quarter and scampered over 50 yards to put the Mustang offense deep in Tiger territory.
