Once upon a time I read every fairy tale book I could get my hands on. I watched every fairy tale movie on VHS and then on DVD as I got older. They all have a story line that give different helpful messages and morals if you pay close attention. Fairy tales have awed their readers and watchers for centuries, and their stories live on to touch the lives of those who read them.
Often times I've wondered how different my perception of Snow White or Sleeping Beauty would be versus the perception of someone who read their stories in the 1800's.
From reading Grimm's fairy tales, to reading Disney's fairy tales ... I can see how people would have different perceptions of characters from the stories.
But the idea here is that most of them teach some sort of lesson or help us preserve the thought that we can too live happily ever after. Because most of them end with that phrase.
I don't know if any of you watch Once Upon A Time, but I can't stop watching it. I don't have cable, so I catch each season as it comes on Netflix or Hulu.
For those of you who don't know, Once Upon A Time is an American fairy tale drama series that has been on ABC since 2011. The show takes place in the fictional seaside town of Storybrooke in Maine, whose residents are actually characters from various fairy tale stories transported to the "real world" town and robbed of their real memories by a powerful curse by the Evil Queen Regina (who is turning out to be not so evil in season four).
Season four, which I began watching a few weeks ago, is about not giving up on the ones you love.
As I sat watching Frozen's Elsa search for her lost sister, Anna, I noticed how determined she was to find her sister.
To me this season of Once Upon A Time, is a perfect message for the spirit of Thanksgiving.
It reminds me, and hopefully others who are watching it, that no matter what happens in life we should never give up on our loved ones.
My mother taught me to love everyone, even my enemies. I guess that is why I am a very social person, because I love people. But most importantly, our loved ones are the ones we should hold on to the closest. There will be arguments, there will be disagreements, but your family is part of you. No matter how hard you try to escape it, like Emma was trying to to do in Once Upon A Time, it will follow you wherever you go.
