A local man who served in the military has a few words of advice for those in service and those going in to military service.
Steve Thompson, says one of the only things he learned while he was in the army, was how important it was to write his mother.
"I learned the military also has a way of getting your attention," Mr. Thompson said. "But one of the most important things I learned was the importance of your mother. I failed to write my mother. I just never thought about sitting down and writing her until one morning in a muster I was called out by my drill instructor and he asked me a very serious question as he was holding something in his hand. He said screaming to the top of his lungs, 'Why have I got a letter in my hand from our commanding officer in regard to the fact that you have not written your mother?' He is doing this in front of 126 people all while screaming to the top of his lungs. He's a great big senior chief ship fitter, and he is not happy. He is enunciating my need and requirement if I consider my life deeply, that I consider writing my mother every single day for a month. Well, all 127 of us wrote our mothers everyday after he got through chewing me out. Mom is important no matter what."
Mr. Thompson was inducted into the U.S. Navy when he was just 18 years-old.
