HUGHES SPRINGS—The Hughes Springs boys powerlifting team opened their 2015 campaign with a first place finish at the 2nd Annual Ore City Invitational Jan. 17. As a team the Mustangs scored 38 points, to lead as field of five schools. Elysian Fields and Jefferson tied for second with 25 points. Jefferson had the tie-breaker. Host school Ore City placed fifth, while White Oak came in fourth place.
Teams can earn between one and seven points, based on how individual lifters place in their respective weight classes. Lifters are judged on the total weight in three events: squat, bench press and dead lift. Hughes Springs had four lifters place first in the meet.
Hughes Springs’ A.J. Garcia had the highest lift total in the meet, with a combined 1,400 pounds to win the Super Heavy Weight Class. Garcia had a tournament-high 600 pound squat. He also bench pressed 300 pounds and dead lifted 500 pounds.
