Barber takes first at powerlifting meet

Daingerfield High’s Chalis Barber opened her 2015 Powerlifting meet on a high note, winning first place at the Sulphur Springs Invitational held Jan. 24. Barber, who competes in the 132-pound weight class, lifted a combined 765 pounds. This included a 315-pound squat, 130-pound bench press and 320-pound deadlift. The win at Suphur Springs vaulted Barber into the number- one ranking in the region, according to the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association (THSWPA). She is tied for 13th in the state. Teammate Demarkea Palmer earned a sixth place finish in the 181-pound weight class. She recorded a squat of 255 pounds, bench press of 125 pounds and 200-pound deadlift for a combined 580 pounds. The THSWPA has ranked Palmer 12th in the region.
