Time to close the “–Gate”

On June 17, 1972 burglars broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. The ensuing attempt by the Nixon administration to cover-up its involvement led to the president’s resignation. The media called the resulting scandal “Watergate” after the complex. Since then it seems that every scandal that comes up must include the “-gate” suffix. How long did it take the media to come up with “deflategate” to refer to the alleged deflating of game balls in the AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts?
