U.S. Steel confirmed on Monday, January 26th that several layoffs will take place on or after February 1st. They also say this is a temporary situation due to market conditions. The layoffs affect both skilled and non-skilled workers at the plant and could impact up to 318 represented employees at Lone Star Tubular Operations according to Spokesperson, Sarah Cassella.
These layoffs are expected to have an impact on the East Texas economy. Lone Star in Morris County is just six miles south of Daingerfield, but one economist expects the fallout to go as far as Smith County. U.S. Steel makes different pipes and tubes for oilfield drilling. Companies that drill are shifting their orders, which mean that U.S. Steel must adjust its workforce. The company said that as those orders shift positively, the workers will be brought back on again accordingly.
