This week, many church-goers will attend special services in observance of Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is Feb. 18.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period that concludes with Palm Sunday, and is commonly observed by Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, United Methodists and Lutherans.
During the service, parishioners will receive the mark of the cross in ash on their forehead. The ashes are an ancient symbol of mourning. The next 40 days leading to Palm Sunday are spent in prayer, fasting, and seeking repentance for sins. The heart of Ash Wednesday is a humbling of oneself through fasting and prayer.
Many churches will have special Ash Wednesday services. First United Methodist Church in Lone Star will host a free pancake supper on Tuesday evening, March 17, and all are welcome. First United Methodist Church in Daingerfield will have Ash Wednesday services at 6:30 p.m. Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Daingerfield will hold Ash Wednesday services at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
