DJH well represented at UIL District meet

Students from Daingerfield
Junior High competed at
the District UIL Academic
meet in Queen City on Dec.
10, 2015. The school finished
in third place overall,
behind Queen City (first)
and Mount Vernon (second).
Students and coaches
were recognized at the
Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD
school board meeting in
December.
There were twelve events
in which DJH students
competed, and the students
performed well in all of
them. Along with many
high individual finishers,
the school had numerous
teams place in the events, as
well. The event results are as
follows.
Judy Pilgrim coached the
Art teams, and eighth
grader Jamie Nix finished in
second place. The seventh
grade team of Laura Carter,
Kaleigh Phillips, and Sonny
Wu placed first overall.
Individually, Carter placed
second, Phillips, third, and
Wu, fourth. Sixth grader
Sydney Key placed first
overall in her grade level.
The calculator teams each
placed first overall in their
grade levels. In eighth
grade, Justice Dorman and
Victor Gonzalez tied for
first, while Ryan Lewis finished
in second. The seventh
grade was swept by
Riley Scholl in first, Natalie
Beasley in second, and
Ebony Chalk in third.
Another sweep occurred in
sicth grade calculator,
where Jaci Simmons placed
first, Sanaa Fields finished
second, and Jazmin Mendez
completed the sweep in
third. Oslyn Lewis and Pam
Scheu coached those teams.
Community Volunteer
JD Davis coached the sixth
grade Chess Puzzle team.
Jazmin Mendez finished
fourth, and Sanaa Fields
finished fifth. Mendez and
Fields combined with
Dylan Baxter to form the
second place overall team.
Vernetta Castleberry and
Becky Fountain coached
Editorial Writing, where
eighth grader Hailey Byrd
finished first, seventh
grader Ebony Chalk finished
fourth, and sixth
grader Karley Nix finished
in fifth.
Sixth graders Haley Lewis
and Karmen Searcy competed
in Impromptu
Speaking, where they finished
first and second,
respectively. The girls were
coached by Vernetta
Castleberry.
Becky Fountain coached
Listening, where seventh
grader Natalie Beasley finished
sixth. Sixth grader
Sanaa Fields finished fifth,
and teamed with Jack Hall,
and Austin Terry to form
the third place team.
Mathematics was coached
by Oslyn Lewis and Pam
Scheu. Eighth graders
Justice Dorman and Victor
Gonzalez placed first and
second, formed the first
place team with Ryan
Lewis. Laura Carter placed
first, while helping form the
third place overall team
with Natalie Beasley and
Riley Scholl.
Sixth gr ader Haley Lewis
placed sixth.
In Number Sense, Justice
Dorman placed sixth, and
formed the second place
eighth grade team with
Victor Gonzalez and Ryan
Lewis. Seventh graders
Laura Carter (second),
Natalie Beasley (third),
Riley Scholl (sixth) formed
the first place team. Sixth
graders Sanaa Fields and
Haley Lewis finished third
and fourth, while forming
the second place team with
Jazmin Mendez. Number
sense was also coached by
Lewis and Scheu.
In Ready Writing, eighth
grader Hailey Byrd placed
third, Seventh graders
Laura Carter finished
fourth and Jennifer Evans
placed fifth, and sixth
grader Haley Lewis finished
second. Those were
coached by Catleberry and
Becky Fountain.
Science: Coaches: Oslyn
Lewis and Pam Scheu
Eighth grader Justice
Dorman finished sixth in
the science competition.
The Seventh grade team of
Laura Carter, Sonny Wu,
and Alivia Ragsdale finished
first overall, with
Carter finishing third and
Wu finishing fifth. Pa,
Scheu and Oslyn Lewis
coached the Science teams.
Lori Loyd coached
History, where eighth
grader Nakeisha Robinson
finished sixth and was a
part of the third place team
with Tori Bennett and
Angelo Vasquez
Oslyn Lewis coached the
first place sixth grade team
in Spelling of Karmen
Searcy, Haley Lewis, and
Levi Allen. Searcy finished
fourth and Lewis finished
fifth overall.
