Hughes Springs recognizes students, honors board

The Hughes Springs School Board met on Jan. 14, for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The board began by recognized numerous student groups who had recently competed well in various competitions. The groups recognized the State-Bound Wildlife team and Majorettes, as well as Band Solo and Ensemble students, Junior High One Act Play, and Junior High and Elementary UIL competitors. Board president commended all the students who were recognized, especially those in UIL Academic competitions, saying, “The increased participation in UIL Academic events has been amazing.” Following the student recognitions, Bill Lindsey, Van Hall, Brandon Golden, Robyn Shelton, Rick Nelson, Clint Morgan, and Billy Willis were recognized for their hard work as the HSISD School Board in honor of School Board Recognition Month. Each board member received gifts from each HSISD campus. The elementary gave fleece blankets and handmade thank you cards, the junior high presented each with a monogrammed vest, and the high school offered a sample basket to each board member which was filled with items made by HS high school students for the Spirit Store. All consent items were passed unanimously, including the minutes and disbursements for Dec. 2015. The board then approved the bid from Rush for a new school bus as part replacement policy. The bid was for $93,539, and also approved the Acceptable Use Policy, which governs the use of HSISD technology by both students and faculty. Following a closed sessions, it was recommended that the board add an additional school year to Superintendent Sarah Dildine’s current contract. The board voted unanimously to approve that recommendation. During the Superintendent’s report, it was noted that several projects were either completed or nearing completion. The Auditorium curtains and lights have been installed, as had the high school door lock system. The new awning between the junior high and band hall had also been completed, and the brickwork at the softball and baseball fields was nearing completion.
