Understanding the entitlement mentality

A Patriots Opinion

By Jim Snyder

One of the biggest problems in our society today is the concept of entitlement. In other words, expecting to get something for nothing. We have so many people who are drawing a check from the government and no one seems to be concerned about where the money comes from. Food stamp usage has gone from 28 million people to over 47 million people in the past 7 years under President Obama. Disability claims have gone up nearly 40%. We see people on the news every week protesting and screaming for free college tuition, free healthcare, increasing the minimum wage to $15, and the list goes on. Everyone wants a piece of the government pie. They all want their share of the “free stuff”. But what they fail to realize is there is no free stuff. Nothing the government gives away is free. Let me explain. The government does not manufacture anything therefore they have no product to sell. So if they have no product to sell how do they seem to have so much money? They take it from others, that’s how. All the money the government has to spend on anything comes by taking it from someone else. This concept is commonly referred to as redistribution of wealth. They take it from one group of people and give it to another. Now the people on the receiving end of this money stream think it’s a great deal, but the people who have to work hard and then have to give up their hard earned money are not as enthusiastic. And I don’t blame them. This is how the government has operated for the last 100 years. There is no free healthcare, or free benefits; someone has to pay for them. In order for there to be free healthcare for one person, there are at least 20 others who have to pay extra for their healthcare. And despite what we were told about Obamacare, it has increased premiums on those who are paying for the ones who want “free” healthcare. We have too many people who want to get something for free and too few of those working 50 to 60 hours a week to provide those freebies. The government is always telling us how we must provide benefits for this group or that group but they never tell us how they plan to pay for it. We are warned and scolded all the time by politicians who tell us that our social security system will run out of money magically right before we want to retire. But have you ever heard them say that the welfare system is running out of money? No, you haven’t. And yet they come up with new ways all of the time to try and give away even more of your hard earned money to people who are not deserving of it. It angers me to no end to see veterans who are homeless and can’t afford housing and food for their families. But our government always rushes to the aid of illegal immigrants and figures out ways to pour money at their feet so they can take care of their families. And now, the president wants to bring even more immigrants here from Syria. Our government programs are bleeding cash everyday yet they come up with new ways to waste even more of our hard earned money by giving it to non citizens who have not contributed one thing to this country. The most irritating part of this whole thing is the large amounts of people who are protesting because they think they deserve more free stuff. Instead of protesting they should be out there thanking the poor schmucks that are providing those free benefits. We have so many whiny kids on college campuses protesting how tough they have it.
