Mustangs win two, improve to 4-5 in district play

The Hughes Springs Mustangs played two game against district opponents last week, winning in Linden and at home against Paul Pewitt. This brings the Mustangs to a 4-5 record in district play.

On Feb. 2, The Mustangs traveled to Linden-Kildare, where the Mustangs pulled out the win, despite being down at halftime, 22 to 25. The Mustangs came back after the intermission and put away the Tigers, with the game ending in favor of the Mustangs, 64 to 58. Austin King was the catalyst for the Mustangs, scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Jaren Jones added 11 points with his eight rebounds, while Malik Chism and Alex Bruce both added eight points for the Mustangs. Chism also add eight assists. Lucky Chism and Kody Burns rounded out the scoring for Hughes Springs, adding seven points each.

Following the win in Linden-Kildare, the Mustangs welcomed the Brahmas from Paul Pewitt to town on Feb. 5. The game belonged to the Mustangs from the opening tip-off, with Hughes Springs outscoring the Brahmas in each quarter on their way to a 62 to 50 win. Lucky Chism was the leading scorer for the Mustangs on this night, scoring 21 points. Austin King added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kody Burns added nine points in the Mustang’s winning effort. Jaren Jones added eight points, while Malik Chism added five points and six rebounds. Chandler King and Logan Skipper also scored for the Mustangs, with King putting up four points, and Skipper adding one.

The Mustangs have away games this week, travelling to Chapel Hill on Feb. 9 and then to Mount Vernon on Feb. 12. The junior varsity and varsity Mustangs will then complete their season at home against the Daingerfield Tigers on Feb. 16.
