Hughes Springs hero prevents fire

By: J. Leslie Riseden

As the current mantra goes, “If you see something, say something.” That’s exactly what Hughes Springs fourth-grader Eric Rosales did in December.

His class was enjoying a showing of Polar Express, complete with hot chocolate. When young Eric thought he smelled something “funny.” He calmly informed his teacher, Laurie Stewart. When she investigated, she discovered that there was, indeed, an electrical short in the urn, which could have caused a fire. Ms. Stewart took quick action, and the children were never in danger -- thanks to Eric being alert and speaking up. Eric was recognized with a special award at the Hughes Springs ISD Board meeting on Feb. 8, which he received with his proud parents and sisters looking on.
