The Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD School Board met in a special called meeting on Friday, Feb. 19. The purpose of the meeting was to consider approval of election judges, alternate judges, and early voting clerk, and to consider hiring an athletic director.

Expecting a standing room-only crowd, the district set up a speaker outside the J.D. Parrish Administration Building. When the meeting opened at 12:30 p.m., the board room was full, and many more gathered outside. The board voted unanimously to approve the election judges, alternate judges, and early voting clerk, and then immediately entered into closed session, to “consider hiring of Athletic Director-Texas Government Code 551.074.”

Many in the crowd gathered outside during the closed session, discussing their support of current Daingerfield assistant coach Michael Mason. There had been a petition, which was submitted to the board at Monday’s regular meeting, requesting the board hire Mason to replace Aric Sardinea, who resigned at the beginning of February. Sardinea accepted a position at Alief Elsik High School.

According to board member Mike Alcorn, “The board is acting on a recommendation from the committee. Each committee member has poured over all 110 applications, and they have presented us with this recommendation.” Following the closed session, the board returned to open session, where they entertained a motion from Jerry Stoermer to hire Mike Waldie as the new athletic director and head coach. The motion was seconded by Jim Snyder, and was approved, unanimously, by the board.

Waldie is coming from Woodville High School, where he was the boy’s athletic coordinator and head football coach for the previous two seasons. Waldie, who posted a 13-8 record at Woodville, has also been the defensive coordinator at Jacksonville, Mount Pleasant, Livingston, Cleveland, and Nacogdoches. He has also served a two year stint as athletic director at Luling ISD, where he posted an 8-12 record.

Superintendent Sandra Quarles said, “We are excited to welcome Coach Michael Waldie and his family to the district. I’ve told him several times that this is the best place in Texas and that everybody looks better in blue.” Waldie said “I am fired up, and extremely glad to be here. Thank you for this opportunity.”

Prior to beginning his time in Texas, Waldie was a defensive coordinator and assistant coach at Bethany College in Kansas, Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and Kansas Wesleyan, in Salina, Kansas. Waldie is expecting to be in Daingerfield full time soon. According to Quarles, “He will be in and out of the district over the next few days, and will come on board full time on March 1.”
