Junior Varsity tennis helps host Mustang tournament

The Daingerfield Tigers put their newly surfaced tennis courts to good use on March 3, as seven of the 14 teams that particapated in the Hughes Springs Junior Varsity tournament played at Daingerfield. The other seven teams played at Hughes Springs. All of the matches were pro sets, which means first team to eight games wins, with no adds or tie breakers.

Madison Cox played girls singles and won her first match by defeating B. Radcliffe of Bloomburg. 8 – 6. In her second match, she lost to L. Niesmann of Elysian Fields, 8 – 3.

Girls doubles had the largest bracket and Daingerfield fielded three teams in this bracket. Playing for Daingerfield were Kallye and Bayley Sullivan, Carley Sikes and Mercedes Collins, and Ashlynn Sanders and Abigale Hargrave. Team 1 of Sullivan/Sullivan were 1–2 for the day, losing to Whitfield/Gallegos of East Texas Charter School, 8-1; defeating Courtney/Fields of McCloud, 8-5; losing to Sikes/Collins of Daingerfield, 8-6. Team 2 of Sikes/Collins were 2–2 for the day, losing to Shafer/Cadenas of East Texas Charter School, 8-3; defeating Sanders/Hargrave of Daingerfield, 8-2; defeating Sullivan/Sullivan of Daingerfield 8-6; then losing to Falgout/Stokes of Redwater, 8-4. Team 3 of Sanders/Hargrave were 0 – 2 for the day, losing to Gasper/Vowel of Elysian Fields, 8-3; and losing to Sikes/Collins of Daingerfield, 8-3.

Rian Sears, in boys singles, lost in a VERY close match, 8-7, to D. Beason of Elysian Fields. In his second match, Sears lost to D. Throckmorton of Ore City 8-3.

In boys doubles Joseph Williamson and Justin Bailey lost their first match to Warren/Poindexter of East Texas Charter School, 8-4, and their second match to Brown/Lara of ETCS, 8- 1.

“This was our first competition of this season and for six of these players it was their first tennis match ever. I am very proud of how they competed today,” said Coach Jana McGoldrick. “Many of them were understandably nervous and it was REALLY windy today, but that is the nature of an outdoor sport. One of the things you cannot control is the weather.”
