The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs were in action this weekend and looked solid at times, but also had some shaky times, as well. Overall on the weekend, the ladies dropped three games and won two, bringing their season total to an eye-popping 14-5 record. District is right around the corner and the ladies are doing rather well, but they are greedy and expect to win each and every time they take to the diamond.

The Hughes Springs squad took one on the chin Thursday, losing to New Diana, 4-2. The ladies were well on their way to possibly winning the contest, but alas, time was exceeded and the girls were left thinking what could have been. The ladies only had four hits on the game and were paced by Kensley Echols and Haylee Wilson who each had doubles. Zoe Lanier was on the mound and gave up three earned runs, but was effective throughout. Next up for Hughes Springs was the Lady Jackets from Elysian Fields. The ladies dropped that contest as well. Bailey Tenbrook was solid, however, getting the lone run batted in, in the 7- 1 setback.

Friday was another day and had different results as well, with the ladies defeating the Lone Oak team, 4-1. Becca Bates paced the squad with a solid five innings of work, with six K’s and allowing only one unearned run. Echols is starting to heat up and delivered two hits, with a RBI and a run scored. Tenbrook, Wilson and Shelbie Fickling each had hits in the win. Pine Tree was next up and the ladies continued to win with Lanier toeing the rubber, going three innings with three earned runs and three K’s. Fickling was the hot bat of the game going three for three with a double. Tenbrook was her usual dominating self, going one for three but had two RBI’s and one run scored. Saturday saw the action continue and the ladies from Hughes Springs squared off against Carthage. Kennedi Northam and Tenbrook paced the lady Mustangs, with both having two hits while Northam had three RBI’s.

Abbye McKinney and Echols scored two runs a piece, with Peyton Blythe scoring two runs as well. Blythe also had an RBI to go along with her two hits, one of which was a double. Pounding out the win 8-2, the ladies set up to finish the weekend with a game against the Pleasant Grove ladies, which ultimately ended with a loss 3-0. Being held to three hits on the game, Northam, Tenbrook, and Katielyn Roth were the only ladies with hits. McKinney took to the mound and lasted four innings, allowing three runs while striking out four batters.

The ladies get back in action Tuesday with a game against Mt. Vernon, and then Thursday at home against Daingerfield.
