The Daingerfield Tigers have a new athletic director, and they will also be working with new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Athletic Director Mike Waldie has brought in two coordinators from Woodville to take the same positions here.

The new defensive coordinator Davin Nelson. Nelson has three years’ experience as a coordinator, and ten total years of experience. Daingerfield will be Nelson’s third position under Waldie; the two also teamed up at Jacksonville and Woodville. When asked what made him follow Waldie, Nelson stated, “He is just a good guy to work for. When he left Woodville to come here, he told me I was his first choice, if I wanted. At first, I wanted to see if I received the head position there, but things worked out for me to join him here.”

Having grown up in Tatum playing ball and running track, Nelson is very familiar with Tiger football. “I have run track right here,” said Nelson, adding “If you do not know about Daingerfield, you have been in a hole.” Nelson brings much enthusiasm and energy to the Tigers sidelines, but believes discipline is the key. “I expect the boys to show they are disciplined, not only one the field, but off as well,” Nelson said.

Jordan Wood will be the new offensive coordinator for the Tigers. “Waldie is an offensive minded coach; he handles the quarterbacks and running backs to make sure that area is clicking. I handle the rest of the offensive aspects. Waldie calls the plays. Wood, like Nelson, has three years of coordinator experience, all under Waldie. Wood also boasts experience at the collegiate level, having served as a defensive student assistant at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.

Wood first became familiar with Daingerfield Tigers as a player at SAU, where they brought in a lot of talent from Daingerfield during his time there. His wife also graduated from Paul Pewitt, also giving him another layer of experience with Tiger football. Like Nelson, Wood brings an excitement to the Tiger sideline. “I am really excited,” Wood said, adding he will expect the players to do the little things right,

Piece by piece, the Tiger coaching staff is coming together for the upcoming season. Continue to watch The Steel Country Bee for more updates to the Waldie’s coaching staff.
