Hughes Springs students qualify for Regional UIL

Hughes Springs High School took 41 students to Region 8 on Monday, April 4. The students competed at the Academic UIL competition. Students placing in the top three in their respective events will be competing at the Regional Academic UIL meet on April 23. Individual results follow.

In Persuasive Speaking, the Mustangs took fourth, fifth, and sixth place. Cody Williams placed fourth, followed by John Willis and Levi Hawkins. Haley Epps placed sixth in Informative speaking. In Number Sense, Cypress Wright placed second. Savannah Wright placed fifth, and Calli Stewart placed sixth. The ladies were also part of the second place Number Sense team.

Cypress Wright placed fifth in Calculator, followed by Stewart in seventh. News Writing had Trishana Carroll placing sixth, while Chandler Priddy placed third in Current Events. In the Spelling competition, Jacob Sims placed sixth. Emily Meade placed fourth in Feature Writing.

The Prose competition saw Carson Moreland place first, John Willis take fourth, and Treston Taylor placed fifth. In Poetry, Levi Hawkins took second, and Shelby Shaddix took fourth. Savannah Wright placed fourth in the Editorial competition, while Ben Denny and Cody Williams took first and second, respectively, in Debate.

The Math team placed second overall, and Cypress placed second in the Math competition. The Social Studies competition saw Tyler Bernard place second. The Journalism team placed third overall, and the Speaking teams placed second overall. Courtney Nix placed third in Headline writing.
