Wildflower Trails draws community together

Mother Nature didn’t stop the 2015 Wildflower Trails from going on as planned last year. This year, she did not even try. Organizers could not have asked for better weather for the Forty-Sixth Annual Wildflower Trails Festival.
Had organizers been able to order the weather for the weekend, it is hard to believe they would have ordered anything other than the weather that was present on this last full weekend in April. Early, high clouds gave way to bright sunshine by parade time, and with a slight wind blowing through Spring Park, festival goers found reasons to stay most of the day.
The parade was led by Police Chief Randy Kennedy, who was joined by Reba Simpson, who is Texas longest-running mayor. The American Legion and Color Guard followed the Chief, and then came the Mighty Mustang Marching band.
The parade then brought forth beauty queens of all ages, tumblers from Steel Belt Gymnastics Academy, and cheerleaders. There was also a rolling car show, which included the Studebaker which was recently won by Robert Terry of Avinger. The Studebaker had belonged to Bruce Hodges, and had been donated by his wife, Carol, as a fundraiser for the community.
Following the parade, the crowd gravitated to Spring Park, where they had a plethora of booths to shop at, food to purchase, and games to play. The thrill seekers were able to purchase wristbands for the carnival rides, and delighted screams could be heard over the sounds over generators from shortly after the parade until late into the evening.
Those who were seeking more of a laid back experience found ample room for blankets of lawn chairs in front of the Spring Park stage, where they were entertained until mid-afternoon with a variety of live music. The evening ended with a street dance and more live music.
