A Patriot's Opinion

By Jim Snyder

Oh my, stop the presses! Can this be real? Jim Snyder is actually saying something bad about the Republican Party. Yes it’s true! The Republican Party seems to have an identity crisis. By that I mean they seem to think one way when it comes to what they want in a presidential candidate but manage to pick someone completely opposite of their belief system.

For the last 28 years or so the Republican Party has wained for another Ronald Reagan to come along. For any of the republicans who are old enough to remember Ronald Reagan was probably the greatest president in our lifetime. We loved him because he was a great communicator, he was tough when it came to foreign policy, and he knew how to create a booming economy. He was also famous for knowing that government was always the problem not the solution. He was a true conservative.

Now let’s look at those who the republican party have put forward over the years to try and repeat Mr. Reagan’s performance.

George Bush Sr.: He violated the golden rule of conservative republicans, don’t raise taxes after you promise not to. And he lost re-election because of it.

Bob Dole: Not much else can be said except he was a very weak candidate. A beloved war hero yes, but just didn’t excite people. He lost to Bill Clinton.

George W. Bush: He was more conservative than any republican in recent history, but he fell in with the Washington establishment and got caught up in the spending spree that most politicians get sucked into. But Mr. Bush did manage to serve two terms.

John McCain: While Mr. McCain may have been a veteran and a POW, he was really never engaged as a conservative. His constant flip flopping and his affliction of reaching across the aisle made him one of what is commonly referred to as a RINO, (republican in name only) because he did little to represent the party who he claimed allegiance to. And as expected he lost to Barack Obama.

Mitt Romney: Once again republicans fell off the Reagan bandwagon and somehow got distracted by a weak candidate who never seemed to be able to convince voters he was a true republican. He lost to Barack Obama.

But there were many republican candidates in recent years that actually have reflected Ronald Reagan’s vision. Fred Thompson, Mike Huckabee, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum, and most recently Dr. Ben Carson and Ted Cruz. It’s always puzzled me how republicans have always screamed they want another Ronald Reagan, but whenever they have a chance to elect a real conservative candidate like Reagan they seem to ignore them and instead nominate some boring, milk toast candidate that couldn’t beat their way out of a wet paper bag.

Now in 2016 we have something that has never been tried in recent political history. We have a republican candidate for president that has zero political experience. Mr. Trump has gotten millions of republican, democrats, and independents to hop on board the Trump train. But seeing the mess that career politicians have made over the past 30 years maybe a businessman who actually has held a real job may be the solution. We will see. And then this past week Speaker of the House Paul Ryan says he is not willing to support Mr. Trump at this time saying he is not sure Mr. Trump will follow the Republican Party platform. Gee Paul you mean the platform where you basically roll over and play dead whenever the president wants something. Yeah we’ve seen that act before. Maybe Donald Trump is exactly what we need to shake up these career politicians in Washington who’s only passion is to fill their pockets with our money and keep the bacon wrapped shrimp parties going.
