The Daingerfield Lady Tigers are the 2016 Girls Track Champions in the 400 meter run after turning in a blistering time of 47.82 seconds in Austin on Friday, May 13.

The Lady Tigers, who were two-tenths of a point off a school record, were started off by senior Chablis Barber, who then handed off the baton to junior Denver Mims. Mims, who finished fourth in the 200 meter dash, passed the baton to Alexis Porter, with Daingerfield running slightly ahead of their nearest competitor. Anchor Layla Johnston breezed across the finish line a good three strides before the second place team.

Fourth place 200 meter dash finisher Mims missed medaling in that event by two one hundredths of a second. The girls were not the only Tigers who competed at the State Track Meet in Austin last weekend. The boys’ 400 meter relay finished eighth, despite setback after setback prior to the meet. Senior Rickey Lee also attended the State Meet, competing in the discus. Lee three a personal best to place sixth in the state.

Coach Dana Carter, who herself had won a state championship with the mile relay team from Post High School in 1989, said “What a feeling it was all those years ago to experience being a state champion as an athlete, but being a coach and seeing four young ladies experience it makes it that much sweeter.” Carter ran the anchor leg for Post in the 1989 championship. Carter added, “I am truly honored and humbled to be their coach and to be able to share in this experience. I have said time and time again they work hard and it resulted in them being State Champions.”
