Avinger students recognized at awards program
Outstanding Avinger students received ribbons, plaques, medals and scholarships at the Academic Awards Program held at Avinger High School May 19. A graduating class of nine seniors shared in sixteen different scholarships, ranging in value from $100 to full tuition for both the valedictorian, Aleshia Fort and the salutatorian, Paige Hill. Several memorial scholarships were awarded in honor of past students and faculty. Other endowments came from a wide variety of organizations including a church, a bank, a utility co-op, an athletic booster club and a rodeo association, as well as the Chamber of Commerce, the 1936 Study Club, Life Scholars and Cress Community Foundation.
UIL awards were presented by Mrs. Teresa Potts, Avinger High School UIL Director. Mrs. Becky Powell presented awards for Advanced Performance in STAAR Level 3.
Dr. Timothy Phy, Principal, presented awards for citizenship, honor roll, perfect attendance, and the “Principal’s Pride Award” which recognizes students who have demonstrated not only academic achievement but community involvement and exemplary citizenship. Dr. Phy also presented the D e p a r t m e n t a l Outstanding Student Awards and UIL Scholar Awards. Avinger ISD S u p e r i n t e n d e n t Jacquelyn Smith recognized Honor Graduates from both eighth and twelfth grades, and congratulated all of the recipients of awards and scholarships, adding that “Avinger is a small school, but the competition is fierce, and we have some really great students.”
