Hughes Springs High School has announced their Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class for 2016. Ms. Savannah Wright and Shelby Golden are the top two graduating Mustangs.

Ms. Shelby Golden is the Hughes Springs Salutatorian for 2016. Shelby is the daughter of Brandon and Jennifer Golden and the sister of Garrett and Sadie. Her grandparents are Paul and Kaye Reynaud and Jimmy and Gail Golden, all of Hughes Springs.

During her time in high school, Shelby was treasurer for the National Honor Society, played on Varsity golf team for four years, and took dual credit classes. Outside of school, Shelby enjoys hunting and fishing with her friends and family. She is also an avid volunteer who raised over $2,400 in over 35 community service hours children who are less fortunate. Altogether, Shelby has logged over 50 hours of community service. Shelby, who has taken college classes since her junior year, has already completed 30 college course hours.

In the fall, Shelby plans on attending Texas a&M-Texarkana to earn her bachelor’s degree in Biology before furthering her education by attending medical school to become a pediatrician.

Ms. Savannah Wright is the 2016 Valedictorian for Hughes Springs High School. She is the daughter of Charles Wright, of Daingerfield, and Renae Wilcox of Winnsboro. Her sister, Cypress, attends Hughes Springs High School, and she has a one-year old half-brother, Cruz Martinez.

While in high school, Savannah was involved in cross country, volleyball, track, and powerlifting. She was also active in UIL Academics, the school’s honors and dual credit programs, tobotics, and the Spanish Club. Savannah also was in student government, the National Honor Society, and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA).

After high school, Savannah will attend Harding University, where she has earned a Trustee scholarship. She plans to study biomedical engineering.

Hughes Springs will hold their commencement exercises on Friday, May 27 at Mustang Stadium. IN case of inclement weather, the ceremonies will be held in the gym.
