Lady Mustang players win championship
Several Hughes Springs lady Mustangs softball stars were in action a couple weeks ago in sunny Florida.
They were representing Texas in the 16 and under age bracket, and they were the “Athletics Gold.” Players from Hughes Springs, Hallsville, Tatum, Hawkins and Harmony comprised a star studded line up that took home the Championship and are the World Champions in the 16A division.
The Lady Mustangs filled out most of the line-up with Kensley Echols, Haylee Wilson, Marisol Kennedy, and Karmen Kennedy joining Petyon Blythe to give Athletics Gold a distinct hometown feel.
They went undefeated in the tournament and after taking down teams from Indiana, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida, it came down to a rematch and championship game against Alabama, (GH Elite). The Athletics Gold team came away with a 4-1 win, and the bragging rights to boot.
Peyton Blythe, who led the Lady Mustangs all year, also led the Gold in hitting, having more than 6 RBI’s in the tournament, followed by Wilson with more than 3 RBI’s. Echols contributed also at the plate with 2 RBI’s as well. Karmen Kennedy got in the action as well.
These ladies put in the time and dedication to hone their skills and stay in fine form, getting ready to lead the Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs next year, with hopes of making an even deeper run than this past season.
Coach Thompson, one can assume, is proud of the work these ladies have done, and is ready to start up another promising season of Lady Mustang softball.
Also hats off to Haylee Wilson’s dad, Rick, who coached these young ladies to the title. Thanks for your work with these ladies as well. Job well done, ladies, you make Hughes Springs proud.
