Lady Tigers fall to Jefferson in volleyball action

The Daingerfield Lady Tigers traveled to Jefferson Aug. 9 for their first matches of the 2016 season.

The freshmen lost 16-25; 23- 25. Tanacia Williams had 4 aces and Kiara Robinson had 3 kills in the loss for the freshmen ladies.

The Junior Varsity lost 12- 25; 27-25; 21-25. Courtlan Peppers had 6 assists and 2 aces and Makayla Robinson had 4 aces in the loss.

The Varsity Lady Tigers lost in a hard fought match: 16-25; 26-24; 19-25; 17-25. In the second set, sophomore Destiny Hurndon stepped to the service line with her team down 7- 17 and did not lose her serve until the score was 19-17, including 5 aces. Junior libero Dee Hall had 6 digs and 3 aces; senior Camryn Byrd had 3 kills and 2 aces; and senior Ashlyn Fomby had 10 assists. With only two returning players from last year’s team, these young ladies are working hard and improving every day.

According to Junior Varsity Coach Jana McGoldrick, “Our motto for this year is Total Efforts Are Mandatory, because this stresses the importance of TEAM and going all out all the time. We have 38 young ladies playing volleyball this year and they have all been conditioning hard, while learning new volleyball skills or polishing up old ones.”

Next Up: The Freshmen and Junior Varsity played in the Mt. Pleasant Tournament Thursday and Saturday, Aug. 11 and 13. The freshman lost to Pleasant Grove, then won against Tyler Chapel Hill on Thursday, while the Junior Varsity lost to Pleasant Grove and Rivercrest. On Saturday, the freshman lost to Mount Pleasant and Gilmer in their two matches. The Junior Varsity began their Saturday against Terrell, going three sets before falling. The then lost to Tyler Chapel Hill in two sets.

The Varsity played in the Longview Tournament (Forest Park) Thursday and Saturday. The squad lost to Longview and Palestine in pool play games. Saturday’s games were against the Longview JV team and Nacogdoches. The ladies lost both of those in two sets. Destiny Hurndon had four kills and nine assists for the Lady Tigers, and senior Camryn Byrd added six digs, three aces served, and two kills.

The Junior Varsity and Varsity squads competed in a tri-match with Avery and Clarksville in Avery on Aug. 16. The Varsity will be competing in Marshall in tournament play on Aug. 18 and 19.

The Lady Tigers also have 20 young ladies running cross country, many of whom play volleyball as well, and their first meet will be in Union Grove on Aug. 27.
