Meet the Tiger

With all the changes in the Daingerfield coaching staff, one big tradition stayed the same, as the community gathered at Mickey Mayne Tiger Stadium on Friday, Aug. 12, in support of the Tigers.

With an overcast sky that kept the temperature more bearable, parents, school staff, athletes, fans, and more gathered for the annual event highlighting fall athletes and sports. Mayben Realty, from Pittsburg, offered their support of the Tigers, and passed out cold water to those in attendance. The Daingerfield- Lone Star ISD Athletic Department offered fresh watermelon for Tiger fans.

After fans took their seats, it was down to the business at hand. After Coach Jana McGoldrick welcomed everyone for coming, she began asking all junior high athletes who were competing in volleyball, football, or cross country to step forward. After these athletes stepped forward, and were recognized with applause from the crowd, McGoldrick proceeded to the high school athletes.

Beginning with boys and girls cross country, each athlete was mentioned and recognized. Many of the high school athletes compete in multiple sports, including band and cheer. Girls’ volleyball was introduced following the cross country teams. It was mentioned by McGoldrick that all three volleyball teams would be competing in tournaments the following morning. The Sweepstakes award winning Tiger Band was also introduced on the field as well. Following the volleyball teams, the crowd was pumped up with cheers by the junior high cheer squad.

Following the junior high squad, the high school mascots took the field for a presentation, followed by the high school cheer squad. The high school cheerleaders, coached by Ms. Janzelle Smith and Martha Gaston, showed off their tumbling, stunting and dancing prowess.

The cheer squads got the crowd fired up for the stars of the night: the Daingerfield High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Tiger football teams! McGoldrick introduced new athletic director/ head coach Mike Waldie and mentioned that most of his coaching staff were out scouting teams that the Tigers will be competing against during the season. The night ended with the Tiger band, along with the athletes in the field, leading the crowd in the Daingerfield school song.

The Lady Tiger volleyball teams have already started their regular season schedule. The cross country teams will begin their season with a meet on Aug. 27, and the Daingerfield Tiger varsity football team will begin their regular season with a Thursday night match up with the Hughes Springs Mustangs on Aug. 25. Kickoff is set for 7:30, at Mickey Mayne Tiger Stadium.
