Lady Mustangs complete busy week

The Hughes Springs Lady Mustang volleyball team was very busy last week. They were equally impressive, despite losing three games of their seven games.

The ladies started off the week with a match-up against Maud. The Lady Cardinals were a tough competitor but went down eventually in three sets, 25- 20, 25-22, and 23-23.

Leading the way for Hughes Springs was Kensley Echols, who had 13 assists and three kills, to go along with two aces, and two digs. Peyton Blythe was stellar was well, having six kills and four assists, while adding four aces of her own.

Next up for the Hughes Springs varsity squad was at tournament in Marshall at East Texas Baptist University. The ladies were up against some tough teams, playing Arp, Liberty Eylau and Carthage.

They lost to Arp, 23-25, and 25-27. But the score shows, it was a tight fought match, with Hughes Springs coming up just short. The ladies then played the Lady Tigers from Liberty Eylau and defeated them 25-15 and 25-21.

Ultimately, the ladies ended the day losing to Carthage, 9-25, and 18-25.

Cypress Wright led the ladies with four block assists and four aces, while adding seven kills. Echols again was a monster on the net with 11 kills and 15 assists. Blythe added 15 assists and had nine kills, to go with six aces and three digs.

The ladies then finished a hectic week, by playing three more teams in the tournament against Center, whom they defeated in 2 sets, 25-14, and 25-17. They also played Queen City, defeating them in 3 sets, losing the first one 20- 25, but then roared back and won the next two sets and won the match, 25-23, and 25-23. In a rematch, the ladies were on the losing end against Liberty Eylau, in a highly charges contest 20-25, 25-22, and 19-25.

Echols led the team in kills and aces with 20 kills, and eight aces, she also added 22 assists. Zoe Lanier was a wall on the net, leading the team with five solo blocks, and two block assists, she also had 17 kills.

Blythe added 27 assists and 16 kills to pace Hughes Springs all weekend. The ladies on the year are 9-4, and will host Pittsburg on Tuesday.
