Lady Mustangs improve to 3-2 in district action
The Lady Mustangs took to the hardwood for some volleyball last week, and were able to defeat the Queen City Lady Bulldogs and the Redwater Lady Dragons, to improve to 16- 10 on the year. They also improved to 3-2 in district.
Tuesday, the ladies were at home, and in a hard fought five set match came away victorious. After winning the first set against Queen City, they traded set wins until it was tied 2-2 going into the fifth and deciding set. With Cypress Wright and Peyton Blythe leading the way, the ladies withstood the lady Bulldogs and won the fifth set, 15-12, and completed the match win. Blythe and Wright each had seven kills on the night, while Blythe had 14 assist and 10 digs. Pearl Perry was big in the match as well with six kills, and Kensley Echols had nine assists and six kills in the win.
Friday, the ladies traveled to the Dragons Den in Redwater. They were not good guests, as they defeated Redwater in five sets. Kennedi Northam, Zoe Lanier and Haylee Wilson led the team to another tense and hard fought win. After winning the first set, they dropped the next two sets, were down two sets to one, and on the verge of defeat. But the ladies fought back, and showed real grit, winning the fourth set, to set the stage for a fifth and deciding set. Echols, Blythe and Wright were also contributors on the night as the ladies pulled out the win, 15-12, just like in Tuesday’s match up.
Echols led the team in kills with 12, while Lanier had eight and Wright and Wilson poured in six apiece.
Northam had two aces with nine digs, while Blythe had three kills, 14 assists and one ace.
The Lady Mustangs will travel to New Boston on Tuesday to face the Lady Lions, and then will play at home Friday against the Lady Bears of DeKalb.
The Mustang football team has a bye week and will not play, so let’s pack the gym and support the ladies, be as loud as we can, and cheer them on to a win.
