Deadline for voter registration approaches

Voters in Texas wishing to cast a vote in the November elections are running out of time to register.

The final day to register to vote is October 11. This includes first-time registrations, as well as changes of residence. The individual must submit their application or change on or before October 11 in person, or the application must be postmarked on or before Oct. 11 if mailed. Registrations and changes must be filed in the county of residence.

In order to cast a ballot in the November 8 General Election, eligible Texas residents must be registered. Residents must meet the following criteria to be eligible to register. The resident must: be a United States citizen; a resident of the county in which the application is submitted; must not be a convicted felon; and must not have been declared by a court to be either totally mentally incapacitated, or partially incapacitated without the right to vote.

Morris County residents can go by the Morris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office, located in the Morris County Courthouse to register. They may also call the Tax Office at 903-645-2446 with any questions. Cass County voter registration applications may be picked up at the City Hall office in Hughes Springs, the Chamber of Commerce office in Atlanta or the Cass County Tax Office in Linden.

When voting, citizens must present their photo ID at the polling place. If the voter does not possess photo ID, they must present a current voter certificate.

Residents who believe they may already be registered to vote may visit www.votetexas. gov and search by one of the following to find out for sure. They can search by: Texas driver’s license number, Voter Unique Identifier; or their first and last name. Applications may also be filled out online, then printed and returned to the appropriate tax office.
