Lady Mustangs end season with loss to Queen City

The Lady Mustangs volleyball season came to an end this past week, after the ladies had fought to stay alive. Ultimately, Hughes Springs saw the season come to a close on Friday night, losing to Queen City in five sets.

Hughes Springs played at DeKalb on Tuesday and won their match in four sets, 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, and 25-16. With that win, they set up a possibility of a showdown with the Lady Bulldogs. Before that happened, though, Hughes Springs had to wait to see if Queen City would lose their final regular season game to find out if a singlegame match to determine who would be the fourth place team in the district.

Back to Tuesday’s game, the ladies were led by Zoe Lanier who had 11 kills in the match up with the DeKalb Lady Bears. Cypress Wright had seven kills and one block, while Charlie Mae Reeves had 11 digs.

Stats were not available for the Friday game with Queen City, but the loss ended the Lady Mustangs’ season with a 21-15 record, and an 8-7 record in district.

On the season, Lanier led the team with 158 kills, and Kensley Echols had 153 kills. Cypress Wright and Peyton Blythe had 134 and 128 kills, respectively, on the year. Lanier also led the Lady Mustangs in blocks with 83 while Wright had 38.

Kennedi Northam led the ladies in digs with an eye popping 272, and was well ahead of the next leader, Reeves, who had 117, while Laken Smith added 105. Blythe led the team in assists with 295 and Echols had 245.
