November 11 has been set aside as a day to honor those who have served and are currently serving in the United States Military. Many schools in the area have Veteran’s Day programs or events, and students from Daingerfield- Lone Star ISD campuses came together to honor all veterans.

Students from West and South Elementary Schools offered songs in celebration and support of all veterans. They began by singing “Salute to the Armed Forces,” which recognized each branch of the military. Music teacher Rosie Guest asked that each veteran in attendance stood as their branch’s theme was sung. The youngsters closed their portion of the program with “God Bless the U.S.A.” and a standing ovation from all in attendance.

Fifth graders from Mr. Bruce Harris’ Social Studies class then shared some facts about Veteran’s Day and what Veteran’s Day means to them. DJH Student Council president Sonny Wu and Vice-president Kayleigh Phillips then read President Barack Obama’s Veteran’s Day Proclamation before the crowd was addressed by Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Karl Stoermer and Commander Kertreck V. Brooks, of the United States Navy.

Following a slideshow that included photos of veterans with ties to Daingerfield- Lone Star ISD, High School student Daniel Pilgrim played Taps as the colors were retrieved. All veterans and their families were then invited to a luncheon in their honor, hosted by the Daingerfield High School Student Council.
