Mustangs win one, lose one to begin 2017

The Hughes Springs
Mustang boys’ basketball
team has started the year
off with a win and a loss,
but have to feel good
about the team headed
forward, after a win
against Redwater and a
close loss to Daingerfield.
The Mustangs beat
Redwater 55-45 last
Tuesday and lost to
Daingerfield 47-45 on
Friday.
On Tuesday, the boys
took on the Dragons from
Redwater and led from the
beginning basically, leading
13-7 after one quarter,
and then 25-18 at the half.
Hughes Springs was led
by Chandler King who
poured in 14 points, going
6-12 in shot attempts,
while having 12 rebounds,
five assists and four steals
and three blocks.
The Mustangs owned
the paint in the game, getting
40 points in the paint
to 0 for Redwater. The
Mustangs also won the
rebounding edge and
scored more points in
transition, as well.
Alex Bruce was hot as
well for Hughes Springs,
shooting 5-12 on the night
and contributed 13 points,
with four steals and one
assist.
After leading at
halftime, the Mustangs
continued to pull away,
scoring 19 points in the
third quarter to increase
their lead to 12 points, and
cruised in the fourth quarter,
finishing the game
with a ten point advantage,
55-45.
Ja-Kobie Craver added
10 points, going 3-5 from
the field and had three
assists.
On Friday, the Mustangs
were down early, and for
most of the game, to the
Tigers, but fought back
throughout the game and
found themselves in a nail
biter. Although the
Mustangs led after one
quarter 12-11, the Tigers
were able to pull out for a
six point advantage at half,
28-22. The third quarter
was a slow one with the
Mustangs only scoring
five points and
Daingerfield only scoring
nine, as they increased
their lead to 10 points
heading into the fourth
quarter.
The Mustangs were
again led by Chandler
King with 11 points, but
also was joined by
Tradarian Craver who had
10 points. Craver also had
seven offensive rebounds
and three defensive boards
as well.
Ja’Kobie Craver and
Alex Bruce poured in nine
and eight points, respectively.
The fourth quarter saw
the Mustangs close the gap
and tie the game, but ultimately
they fell 47-45, in
an exciting game that saw
the Mustangs fight until
the end.
This week the boys will
travel to Omaha and take
on the Pewitt Brahmas
and then on Friday will
host New Boston.
On the year, the
Mustangs are 7-10 with a
1-2 record in district.
