Hughes Springs hosts District Tennis Tournament

The Hughes Springs’ Mustangs were the District Champions with 11.5 points in the District Tennis Tournament held March 25 and 26 in Hughes Springs. The Lady Mustangs captured the runner-up spot with 7.5 points.
New Boston boys captured the runner-up spot with 6 points and the Linden-Kildare girls captured the District Championship with 8.5 points.
In girls’ singles, Alyssa Bynum of Linden defeated Nayla Girard of Hughes Springs 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to win the girls’ singles title. Samantha Parrish of Pewitt defeated Marli Cummings of Hooks 6-0, 6-1 in the third place match. Girard of Hughes Springs then defeated Parrish of Pewitt in a playback match 7-5, 6-4 to earn second place. Bynum and Girard will advance to the regional tournament.
In boys’ singles, Hayden Smith of Hughes Springs defended his district title by defeating Richard Hawron of New Boston 6-2, 6-1. Ezequiel Campos of Hughes Springs defeated Nathan Reiter of Hooks 6-0, 6-0 in the third place match. Smith and Hawron will advance to the regional tournament.
