Join a service club and reap rewards
Someone mentioned recently that when the economy went south in the 1980s, many service clubs became a thing of the past.
Lions International is going strong as ever, even though membership the last few years has fallen off. There are active clubs in Daingerfield and in Hughes Springs. Our motto is “We Serve.”
In Daingerfield you often see a box with eye glasses on it asking for old glasses you can no longer use. Daingerfield Lions are busy putting flags up for businesses during certain holidays. They offer a pancake supper and a chili supper before football games in the fall.
The Hughes Springs Lions Club holds its yearly chili supper at the Homecoming football game in the fall. Many people look forward to that stop before attending the game. The Hughes Springs Lions also use the Wildflower Trails Festival as a time to raise money with a fish fry at Spring Park.
You’ll see Lions around if you look; they wear the yellow vests with a lot of pins on them.
Lions attend chamber of commerce banquets in each city honoring their members. Daingerfield Lions Club also gives a soon-to-be graduating senior the Horizon Award and a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
Spring is a busy time of year for the Hughes Springs Lions Club as they search applications to see who they can award a scholarship to.
Lions Clubs are sought out by school nurses and other members of the community to help with eye glasses and exams for the children and some adults. Lions Clubs also support the Lions Club for Handicapped Children at Kerrville.
Lions are becoming older and fewer in number. We need members to continue to offer the assistance that we do to our children and our communities.
You can find us on www.lionsinternational.com or contact either the Daingerfield Lions Club or the Hughes Springs Lions Club. Daingerfield member John Conway’s number is 903-656-2680 and Hughes Springs member Dennis Sutherland’s number is 903-639-3231; they would be glad to give you information. Interested visitors are welcome to help continue the service work that we specialize in. Volunteer a few hours of your time to help others and join a local Lions Club. I can guarantee the rewards are tremendous.
