School holds fantastic events

When you are used to seeing kids at school in their daily attire, it is a real treat to see them all dressed up to go out for a different caliber of banquet than they are used to.

This year was the second year I was invited to attend the very prestigious Hughes Springs High School Distinguished Scholar’s dinner. This was held at the Mount Pleasant Country Club.

Parents and students arrived and last year I learned a really neat thing they do at this banquet, besides eat. Each honors student was given a chance to ask their favorite educator to come to the banquet. This educator had to have made a big impact on their growing up through the years of school. How nice this was and what an honor it was for these educators.

After the attendees were finished eating, high school counselor Misty Lake talked and called each student to the podium to honor their chosen teacher and tell a little bit about their plans for the future and where they plan to attend college.

Anna Applin and Michelle Terry both honored Sandra Willis; Kaitlin Brantley honored Martha Giddens; Austin Calcote honored Jeremy Griffin; Kassity Connor honored Rebecca Hampton; Jordan DeBord honored Katie Denevan; and Dillon DeWitt honored Hannah Fitch.

Others included Brady Edmiston honoring James Fitch; Kaitlin Lindsey honoring Elizabeth Mc- Coy; Jessica Modisette honoring John Russell; Dylan Moore honoring Lisa Moreland; Halie Pippin honoring Kelley Pemberton; Hayden Smith honoring Ken Miller; and Kaleigh Stoermer honoring Pam Golden.

It was amazing to see teachers that were also honored last year by students. That really shows they are making an impact year after year.

Some of the students spoke very easily and to some it was a little more difficult. But for the most part, you could tell these students had been taught well by their teachers.

It was such a fun night and there was a lot of joking and teasing. One senior said she intended to run for president. This is really a nice touch to the near end of a school year for these students who have excellent and risen to the top of their class. They could have had a banquet in the school cafeteria that would have  been much easier. However, theychose a really nice place to honor the students and other educators.

And, me too! What an honor it was to be invited to share in this event. It was a delightful evening for all who attended. The frosting on the cake came at the end when Dr. Judy Traylor, vice president for student and outreach services at Northeast Texas Community College, addressed the students and talked to them about their future.

Great kids and great evening—I am so thankful I was invited. This was such a special night to show these students they were appreciated for their hard work in school and a chance to let the students honor someone from the school system that had inspired them so much.

There is a lot of excitement this last month of school for many graduating seniors, and this special banquet for the distinguished scholars was really the icing on the cake for them. Great job Hughes Springs School!
