A Hughes Springs’ man was arrested May 2, for a traffic violation and resisting arrest, according to Hughes Springs Police Chief Randy Kennedy.

“Michael Lee was arrested on Cass County Road 2906, just outside of Hughes Springs, by Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Daniel Britton,” Chief Kennedy said. “Mr. Lee was stopped on a traffic violation and refused to obey the officer’s commands. He would not identify himself other than to state he was a ‘sovereign’ citizen. Mr. Lee said he was not subject to the laws of Texas and did not recognize the trooper’s authority over him.

“They got into a struggle and the officer tazed him and then was able to place handcuffs on him. I arrived on scene and identified Mr. Lee for Trooper Britton. Mr. Lee was taken to the Cass County Jail.”

Resisting arrest is a Class A misdemeanor which carries a $4,000 fine and/or one year in jail.
