A man riding a horse, pulling another horse and a mule, accompanied by an Australian Shepherd caught the attention of many Morris County residents last week as he was traveling through the county headed south. Bryan Brant camped near South Union Baptist Church May 7 for the evening.

Originally from Kansas, Mr. Brant said he began his trip near St. Louis, Ill. and continued south to Cairo where he followed the Ohio River through Illinois and crossed a ferry into Kentucky.

“I was on my way to Quebec, Canada,” he said. “I traveled through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. I began my trip on June 12, 2012. I am enjoying seeing the country. I first went north to learn about my family history. One of the patriarchs of my family was Chief Joseph Brandt of the Mohawk Tribe who lived near Canandaigua, New York. The chief lived during the time of the American Revolution. He even went to England and visited with King George III to work out peace between England and the Colonists. The chief wanted them to listen to the reservation of peace and take that as a foundation for the government. There were a lot of relationships between my family and the founding fathers of this nation. King George III and the chief became very good friends.

“When I got to New York, I was given a book about a man named Charlie Goodnight. He rode this route in 1835 from Illinois to Central Texas some 800 miles bareback. He was 16 years old and said he wanted to be a cowboy. He did and became a legendary cowboy. He is not related to me, but it is just history.”
