The public comment session was busy again at the May 20 meeting of the Hughes Springs City Council as citizens again questioned the reasoning of bringing in a low income housing that would be located in close proximity to their residences. Ronnie Davis signed up to speak.

“At last month’s meeting, it was said there would be a representative from Stone Leaf Properties here to talk about the affordable housing to be built off Judson,” Mr. Davis said. City Secretary George Fite said they were not on the agenda. “No, they will not be coming in at this time,” Mr. Fite said. “As I told you, Mr. Davis, I told Marlene this was a grant application for tax credit funding. We said we would hopefully know something in the summer. The city of Hughes Springs was tied in a four-way. We found out that funding went to Jacksonville, Emory and Winnsboro. We feel they will apply for next year’s funding. When they reapply, everything will be done as posted and they will come again. The grant this time did not get funded. There is no project at this time.

“Next year Stone Leaf may want to apply as it was a viable application. Everything changes in regards to the location, etc. next year. If it is an application for funds available from the federal government that will be the way they will approach us if they want to come back here in November of this year.”
