Charlie Winton Hampton, a 33rd degree Mason and his wife, Helen, were surprised recently at Pleasant Springs Health Care Center in Mount Pleasant. Friends and family gathered to see Mr. Hampton receive the Golden Trowel Award, presented to him as a long-time member of the Marietta Masonic Lodge #1181.

Under the direction of Marietta Masonic Lodge Master Cecil V. McCraw and District Deputy Grandmaster James S. Cornett of the District 5 Grand Lodge of Texas, 94-year-old Mr. Hampton was given the honor, which represents exceptional dedication and service contributions to the local chapter and the Society of Masons.

Jodie Harris, of Iron Bluff Masonic Lodge #13776 of Lone Star, was the Master of Ceremonies. He welcomed all and introduced the local dignitaries. He also gave a brief commentary about Masonry and its historical significance.

Cecil McCraw gave both the opening and closing prayers and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

Howard Barron presented Mr. Hampton a cap to wear with his purple heart, which represents his service in the military.

No Masonic celebration can be complete without refreshments, which were provided by members of the Eastern Star. These members from the Omaha Chapter included Virginia Fortenberry, Ann Clifton, Ethna Culver, Mildred Lewis, Carole McGee, Wilma Broch, Janetta Elder and Hellon Catlett.
