Celebrating our nation’s birthday

Many people look forward to July 4 as a day they don’t have to work. It is a day for family, picnics, time on the lake, fishing, swimming and having barbecues. As dusk approaches, many have their own display of fireworks or attending one of the many big fireworks displays in the area. Some cities plan patriotic parades to celebrate the holiday. It is a fun holiday and those from young to old enjoy the festivities. Many have their flags up and waving in the breeze.

July 4 is our nation’s birthday. Happy Birthday America! The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776, declaring this country free and independent from Britain. That was the day democracy was born in this country.

We are known as the ‘land of the free and the home of the brave.’ Many people that are oppressed in countries where they live strive to come to America so they can participate in the freedom and bounties of this land. We are truly a diverse nation and for the most part, the mixture is welcome and people get along with their different cultures. The different cultures are what make this country America.

I have never lived in another country and have never traveled overseas but I have read many articles throughout the year that tell of people in other lands that long to come to America. Stories are written of many who have come to this country and have worked hard and have had a very successful life. Most of them are truly grateful for the land of the free and the opportunities that are available in this country.
