Time to be extra careful of pets and children

We haven’t hit the famous Texas 100 degree weather yet, but it is nearing the 90s as I write this. I try to write a reminder often to beware of the temperatures inside vehicles and take care you do not ever, ever, ever leave a pet, a child or an elderly person in a vehicle in hot weather, even if the windows are rolled down.
Every year headlines in the news scream out that someone left a pet or a child in a vehicle and they died. We are horrified someone would do that. Every year some of the best parents and most well-meaning and loving pet owners have and will leave their children and animals in a hot vehicle. They may think it’s not hot enough at 80 degrees or that it is ‘just for a minute.’ I’m here to tell you one second is one second too long. Do not ever leave a defenseless human or pet in a vehicle that will end up being too hot for them.
Don’t do it. Not even for a few seconds; not even for that ‘I’ll just be a minute’ stuff. Heat kills. It really does.
I know we are busy; I know we are in a hurry; I know there are a million things to get done in one day’s time. But, we all know heat kills and we should always be alert.
Be ever mindful of it when you get in your car. Write a note to yourself, leave it on the dash, put something on your purse, on your key chain, use anything to remind you to look in the back seat and make sure your car is empty of children or pets each time you leave it; even if it is for a minute to go in the post office Time to be extra careful of pets and children or a store. Vehicles get extremely hot. In Texas there are some days where a Kleenex or gloves are needed to hold on to the wheel when a vehicle has been sitting in the heat. The steering wheel is just too hot to hold until the vehicle cools down.
