Customers will see increased garbage rates in Hughes Springs

The third amendment to the contract between the city of Hughes Springs and Waste Management was approved at the Hughes Springs city council meeting on July 15. Doug Sims, public sector solutions manager for Waste Management, was present.
 
“Five years ago you asked for proposals and authorized a contract with us,” Mr. Sims said. “We are asking for you to extend the contract another five years. We are already giving scholarships to students, $1,000 to the Wildflower Trails and help with the demolition of homes. None of these things are really written into the contract and I wanted that written into the contract. One of the things is that there is no increase over 3 percent in a given year. That is the maximum. The contract is pretty much the way we stated. We certainly wanted to do these things from a competitive standpoint. We are more than a trash business and we want to stay here. Anything that we originally agreed to is included.
 
“We are asking for a 7 percent increase for the new contract. It is a larger increase this year, but in future years it will never be more than 3 percent.” City secretary George Fite reminded the council of another trash service.
