In the spring, Hughes Springs Alumni RJ Epps was talking to Hughes Springs ag teacher John Russell about the opportunity that he had to do some community service for a bike race for Wounded Warriors. The race was to take place at Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas, owned by former President George W. Bush.
RJ and a few fellow veteran Texas A&M Aggies had the opportunity to travel to the ranch and do some work on the bike trail to ensure a good race. He was able to meet with George W. and asked if the Aggies could name and mark the part of the trail they were working on. Former President Bush, being a supporter of not only veterans but the Aggies, welcomed the idea. They named the section ‘Reveille Ridge.’ RJ came back and was telling Mr. Rus-sell about a plaque that he and his fellow veteran Aggies were talking about and Mr. Russell asked for the opportunity, as both a Mustang and an Aggie, to help them with their project. Mr. Russell took the Texas A&M Veterans Association logo and his artistic painting abilities and came up with an awesome sign. Hughes Springs’ students Dakota Skinner and Christian Smith were the two students who put the sign together. Mr. Russell said that after painting the sign and a trip to Crawford, he is proud to say that a sign from Hughes Springs FFA is now forever on display at Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, home of former President George W. Bush and will be seen for years to come by riders doing the Wounded Warrior Race.
