Mustangs are ready for action starting Aug. 29

The Hughes Springs Mustangs have, in recent history, been pegged as a tough, hard-nosed football team. Playoff football is expected every year now under Coach Chris Edwards, who now is in his eighth year as the head coach and athletic director. The past three years of football, specifically has been a run of football that many in these parts of East Texas would envy.
Prior to last year’s loss in the area round of the playoffs, the Mustangs went to the Regional final in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, with both of those losses being close, hard-fought contests that went down to the wire. This year’s brand of Mustang football proves to be just as entertaining. With a bevy of young players waiting in the wings to be breakout players, Mustang football seems to be a safe bet to make the playoffs and make the city of Hughes Springs proud for many years to come. The senior class of Mustangs for 2014 include, but are not limited to, starting half-back, Fred Hopkins Jr., who has been slashing his way around the opposing defenses for the past two years and this year is sure to bring the same. Free safety/tight end, Hunter Smith, has been a stand out on both sides of the ball, having an almost uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time, snagging interceptions and fumbles almost at will. His big play ability on offense keeps defenses honest, and with his big frame, he is sure to be a favorite targetfor starting quarterback, junior Malik Chism. Senior Corky Westmoreland will again be a force on the defense at his linebacker position, where last year, he was a menace for opposing offenses. With his nose for the ball, Westmoreland seemingly was in on or around every play. Linemen, Cody Pilgrim and Paul Calderon, return on the line, offensively and defensively, and hope to open the holes for the backs on offense and plug the holes on defense.
