Keeping those pesky deadlines

From hearing some exasperated people calling on Monday or Tuesday after the deadline, I thought I’d offer some comments on what deadlines mean to some of us.
Many times at the newspaper office we get a call from someone an hour or a day after our deadline, and they can’t understand why they cannot get whatever they need in the paper. I feel sorry for them, but we are like a lot of other things in life; the newspaper has deadlines. Would you possibly think of missing the deadline to board a flight and after it is winging its way in the sky, and think you could possibly get yourself on the flight? Surely the pilot can’t turn his aircraft back just to pick you up. Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if that were the case? If you miss a flight, you are just out of luck until the next one.
Deadlines are set for a purpose. That purpose is not to break them. In the case of a newspaper, we have to allow ourselves some time to assemble the paper and get it to the printer. If we kept changing and revising, we’d never get it to the printer.
I sometimes think garage sales are the worst offenders for deadlines. Most of us want to wait until Monday morning to run them. I know in my case, I want that last glance at what the weatherman has to say about the upcoming weekend. If he is positive it will rain, I surely won’t plan a garage sale. For about the last six years the deadline for classified ads, including garage sales, has been before 4 p.m. on the Friday before. It’s amazing how many people are surprised when we tell them that; when they call on Monday or Tuesday.
